Here's what we know about truffles
Truffles grow wild in the forests of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and North America but they are particularly used in Italian, French, Spanish, Greek and Middle Eastern cooking.
The largest piece of white truffle, 1.8 kgs, was sold in December 2014 for a whopping AED 224,000 (US$ 61,000) to a Taiwanese buyer. But 2014 was the year truffles became popular. Today, due to high consumption, the supply of truffles has drastically increased sending truffle prices down by almost 30%.
So what is truffle oil then?
Truffle oil is a modern culinary ingredients used to impart the flavour and aroma of truffles to a dish. It is commonly used as a finishing oil in a variety of dishes, including truffle fries, pasta dishes, pizza and puréed foods such a mashed potatoes and deviled eggs.
Top Ten Uses of Truffle Oil
1. Drizzle truffle oil over mashed potatoes.
Widely regarded as one of the top uses for truffle oil, the mild flavored starchy base of potatoes, pasta polenta and risotto makes a perfect match with the flavor of black or white truffle oil.
2. Pizza with truffle oil.
Truffle oil makes a wonderful addition to pizza crust, especially white pizza.
3. Eggs and truffle oil.
This is a great pairing. Whether drizzled over scrambled eggs or an elegant cheese omelette, eggs and truffles are a pairing not to be missed. Though fresh truffles are frequently used with eggs, truffle oil is an inexpensive way to enjoy this classic pairing.
4. Truffle oil goes well with many vegetables.
Some of our favorite combinations include asparagus, cauliflower, sweet potato, yams, corn, mushrooms of any type, and squash of any type.
5. Dishes using wild mushrooms.
Dishes using wild mushrooms can be enhanced with truffle oil. Think creamy mushroom soup, mushroom mac and cheese, wild mushroom polenta, etc.
6. Truffled popcorn, potato chips and French fries.
Our list of uses for truffle oil would not be complete without this addition. After the cooking process is complete, toss the finished product with salt and truffle oil and enjoy.
7. Bruschetta with Black Truffle Oil.
Piled high with gorgeous crumbles of cheese and peppery tomatoes dressed with black truffle oil, these toasts will never be accused of being tasteless in any way, shape or form.
8. Truffle Oil drizzled over Pasta.
This is our favourite of all. A little black truffle oil does so much good on ravioli!
9. Mushroom Risotto with Black Truffle Oil.
This one is a no-brainer. If you're having a mushroom risotto, do drizzle some truffle oil to enhance the taste!
10. Use truffle oil to enhance the flavor of fresh truffles.
Some truffles are more mild than others and drizzling black or white truffle oil directly on fresh truffle slices is one of our favourite uses for truffle oil.
